APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Mike Maut, the principal at Xavier High School in Appleton, has been fired, according to a letter sent to district families Thursday.

The letter was written by St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Interim President Kathy Heim.

It said the complaint was received by the Diocese of Green Bay’s Office of Safe Environments, which opened an investigation into Maute.

Heim did not provide details because it is a “personnel matter.”

Dear Xavier families!

We regret to inform you that the Diocese of Green Bay’s Office of Safe Environment has received a complaint which has initiated an investigation. As a result, Mr. Mike Maute no longer works at St. Francis Xavier. Since this is a personnel matter, additional details cannot be provided.

The safety of our children is our number one priority. We understand that this news may be upsetting and we are committed to supporting you along with our students and staff. On Friday, Nov. 15, Xavier High School will have three Catholic Charities mental health counselors available to staff and students.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. If you have additional information, please contact the Office of Safe Environment at 920-272-8198.

As of Saturday morning, Maute’s photo and bio were posted on the Xavier Catholic School website. In his biography, in particular, it is stated: “Mr. Maute began his career at Xavier in 1996…he left Xavier in 2012 to become the principal of Lourdes Academy Middle and High School in Oshkosh. He returned to Xavier in 2014 as director.”
