A case has been registered against four Telegram channels for allegedly spreading misleading information to incite students and disrupt law and order during a protest outside the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC), police said on Sunday.

According to them, the Telegram channels against which the FIR has been registered are PCM Abhyas, General Studies Edushala, Make IAS and PCS Manthan.

An FIR was registered under Section 318 (4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and under the Information Technology Act at the Civil Lines police station on Thursday on a complaint lodged by Krishna Murari Chaurasia, UPPSC police post in-charge, police said.

According to the FIR, misleading information was uploaded and circulated through various Telegram channels to incite students to violate law and order.

Screenshots of the specified channels are attached as evidence to the complaint.

The students started their protest outside the UPPSC office on November 11 against its decision to conduct preliminary examinations for Provincial Civil Services (PCS), Audit Officer (RO) and Assistant Audit Officer (ARO) on two days and demanded that they be conducted on the same day.

On Thursday, the fourth day of the protest, the UPPSC postponed the RO-ARO exam and announced that it would conduct the old pattern PCS exam on a single day. The commission also announced that it will form a board for the RO-ARO examination to ensure its transparency and fairness.

On Friday, the students called off their protest and the UPPSC announced that the PCS-2024 preliminary exam would be conducted in two shifts on December 22.
