Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva was hospitalized after taking a dip in the Yamuna to protest pollution. He promises to push for the cleaning of the river before Chhath Puja.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Delhi president Virendra Sachdeva was admitted to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on Saturday morning with skin rashes and shortness of breath, two days after he took a dip in the Yamuna to highlight the level of pollution in the river, the Delhi BJP said.

The party added that Sachdeva had no previous problems with shortness of breath and skin rashes. According to party leaders, doctors examined the Delhi BJP chief at RML, prescribed medicine for three days and discharged him at 10 pm.

“For me, the cleanliness of the Yamuna before Chhath Puja is more important than my health and today I am happy that my immersion in the Yamuna has led to widespread criticism of the Kejriwal government’s corruption and negligence under the guise of cleaning the Yamuna. As soon as I recover, I will visit Chief Minister Atisha to demand the cleaning of the Yamuna before the Chhath Puja,” said Sachdeva.

New Delhi Member of Parliament Bansuri Swaraj said Sachdeva’s immersion in the river had shaken the AAP government. “AAP’s deception about the purity of the Yamuna became evident when Sachdeva invited Arvind Kejriwal and Atisha to visit the Yamuna, but neither of them turned up. The AAP government has done nothing but politicize the Yamuna cleaning issue for the last decade. When the BJP comes to power, a Yamuna Cleanliness Tribunal will be set up to ensure continuous cleaning efforts,” Swaraj said.

Meanwhile, Delhi environment minister Gopal Rai said the BJP was making a drama out of the issue. “BJP is a polluting party. He understands that pollution can only be reduced by taking dramatic action. I think all governments and parties should work together to fight pollution. I wish Sachdev a speedy recovery but please stop the drama. I wrote a letter to the Delhi BJP president when I was making the action plan for the winter, but so far no proposals have been received. His drama continues and our work continues,” Rai said.

Politics surrounding the polluted river have escalated over the past week. Chhat will be celebrated from November 5 to 8 and involves devotees offering prayers to the Sun while standing in knee-deep water. Scenes of Chhath devotees standing in the polluted, frothy waters of the Yamuna near Kalindi Kunj have sparked public outrage in recent years. Every year, political parties blame each other for the toxic industrial pollution of the river.
