Warehouse burglaries are on the rise in North Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Despite various security measures such as surveillance cameras, PIN code entry and gated access, a North Las Vegas storage facility has reportedly been busted by burglars.

“I feel hurt,” said Jessia de Chanel, who was the victim of the thefts.

De Chanel said he has leased space at Shield Storage on Simmons Street in North Las Vegas for about three years.

He thought his collectibles, which he had been accumulating for about 30 years, would be protected in this supposedly secure facility.

“I had floor-to-ceiling drawers filled with toys, games and comics,” De Chanel said.

But on October 7, he received one of the most painful calls of his life. The manager of the establishment said that someone broke into his department and took many valuable souvenirs.

“My heart was broken when I opened the door… They were practically gone, except for one or two boxes,” De Chanel said. — Buying comics, toys and games was my escape. It scares me so much, as if someone is going after me or my things.”

The manager told him that at least eight other victims were injured during the same time period.

The next day, DeChanel went to the North Las Vegas Police Department to report the incident.

“I was shocked to hear from them that they’ve done about 30 police reports from people just connected to Shield Storage at many of their locations throughout the valley, not just mine, but, you know, many. It was very shocking and they told me Later, when they asked the manager for the video footage, they couldn’t find any footage, not only for me, but for all these places, gross negligence or the culture of Shield Storage, that it was an inside job,” said Where is Chanel?

According to the NLVPD, from January 1, 2023 to September 30, 2023, 64 warehouse burglaries were reported in North Las Vegas.

At the same time, almost 120 cases were registered during the same period in 2024.
The NLVPD said that while the data is concerning, they are actively addressing the issue.

De Chanel said he also tried to review the surveillance video, but the facility manager said she was “too busy talking to the eight victims.”

“I thought it was kind of sad that she wouldn’t look at the surveillance camera right away, but I said, ‘Oh, okay, whatever.’

However, De Chanel said he was contacted by the district manager after the incident and told he was investigating the matter.

In an emailed response to De Chanel, County Executive Daniel Arias said he visited the site but did not have any video footage to help clarify the situation.

Channel 13 visited the location to try to learn more about the incidents, but an office worker told us they had no comment and asked us to leave their private property. When we asked the employee to contact the district manager, he said, “He said we don’t want to discuss it right now.”

Channel 13 received the contact information of the district manager and contacted him. He shared this response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding the recent incidents at our facility located at 4430 Simmons St. in North Las Vegas.

Our main task is to ensure the safety of each tenant and their belongings. For this, we actively tried to cooperate with the local authorities in order to comprehensively solve this issue. Unfortunately, our efforts to cooperate and provide evidence of the suspects have faced significant difficulties, as the local authorities have so far not responded to the verification of the evidence we have provided. Without their support, our ability to fully review and resolve the situation remains limited.

In the meantime, we are taking all possible measures to mitigate the consequences of these breaches. Repairs to the facility are already underway to address the damage, and we are also implementing system upgrades to improve the security of the entire property. While we are committed to protecting our tenants and preventing future incidents, the assistance of law enforcement would be invaluable in identifying and apprehending those responsible for these recent incidents.

We appreciate your interest in this matter and hope that additional attention can help us get the support we need from local authorities.”

While De Chanel said storage insurance can cover the cash value, the emotional value will never be recovered.

“Most of the stuff I get isn’t even collectible; it’s for my future children,” De Chanel said.

Channel 13 reached out to the NLVPD about the Shield Storage claims and they said they would look into it and get back to us.

We’ll update this story as soon as we hear back.
