Maryland woman pleads guilty to insurance fraud and theft

Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced today that Chanelle Angelia West, 46, of Essex, Maryland, pleaded guilty to insurance fraud and theft charges in separate cases in Baltimore County District Court.

West, a former clerk with the Maryland Department of Labor, pleaded guilty to a theft scheme that involved altering checks meant for the state. She deposited these altered checks into her personal accounts while she was with the department and continued to forge the checks even after she was fired. The value of the theft is between $1,500 and $25,000.

In another case, West also pleaded guilty to insurance fraud. She falsely claimed lost wages due to a car accident after she had already been fired from her state job in 2022.

Sentencing in both cases is scheduled for December 6, 2024 in Baltimore County District Court.

Attorney General Brown thanked the Office of Fraud and Corruption, Baltimore County District Attorney Scott Shellenberger and the team of attorneys and investigators who worked on this case.
