DESTIN, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – The Okaloosa Sheriff’s Office has released details of a crash that reportedly involved several neighborhoods students were affected.

A sheriff’s office report said the crash happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. Friday. It also said four students were in a Dodge Charger heading west on Emerald Coast Parkway in Destin.

OCSO officials said witnesses reported the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and overtaking other vehicles on the road.

According to law enforcement, the vehicle struck a Volkswagen Atlas that was making a left turn onto Tequesta Drive from eastbound Emerald Coast Parkway.

After colliding with another car, the charger crashed into a utility pole, split in half, overturned and then caught fire, the statement said.

Officials said the two students in the car were ejected and the driver was extricated from the vehicle by first responders.

The students were taken to local hospitals, and officials said at least two were seriously injured.

It is reported that the driver of the Volkswagen Atlas received non-life-threatening injuries.

The westbound lanes of the Emerald Coast Parkway remained closed for several hours after the crash, officials said, and the incident is being investigated by the OCSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit, which looks into fatal or serious injury crashes that could result in death. Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor at this time, they added.
