66-year-old man charged with breaking into Worcester nonprofit and stealing safe

WORCESTER — A 66-year-old Worcester man was arrested Friday morning in connection with a Hacking on September 17 at Abby’s home, police said Friday.

Larry Berry of Outlook Drive was arrested after an officer assigned to the Neighborhood Response Team observed him driving in the area of Harrison Street. There was a warrant out for Berry’s arrest.

Julie Orozco, executive director of Abby’s House, told the Telegram & Gazette in September that a man made off with the thrift store’s safe after breaking into the High Street building using a crowbar.

Orozco said the safe was empty at the time of the break-in.

Abby’s House, a non-profit organization, offers affordable housing on High Street for women who have experienced violence in the past.

Commission shop is located on the basement floor of the building.

Surveillance footage provided by Orozco shows a man dressed in black enter the thrift store through the entrance, holding a crowbar.

The man could be seen browsing the thrift store and stopped by the jewelry section where he crouched under the counter. Later he got up carrying the store’s safe.

Footage from outside the building shows the man placing the safe on the pavement before leaving. Later, a car drove up, the driver of which brought the safe into the car.

The video later shows the man returning to the store. His face was not covered, and he even looked directly into the camera at one point.

Berry was arrested on charges of nighttime breaking and entering, larceny in a building, possession of burglary tools and vandalism, according to police.
