The worried flyer allegedly calms himself down with a drink, puts himself in handcuffs

An extremely nervous air traveler tried to calm her nerves with booze — and almost made it through the hour-long flight without incident — only to become petrified upon landing, assaulting her husband, hitting other passengers and ending up in flexcuffs, according to a criminal complaint unsealed in the the slaughter house

Alaska Airlines Flight 46 was just minutes from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport on Nov. 12 when Caryn Denise Evan had to be grounded, the complaint states.

It says an off-duty officer aboard the Boeing 737 later told police he saw Evan, 38, in Bethel, alaska, at the airport before takeoff, where she would walk up to strangers, hug them, and then scream, “F*** you bitches, f*** you bitches.”

According to the complaint, the short jump was uneventful until the plane began to descend. That’s when the passenger sitting next to Evan, who was sitting in the middle seat in the seventh row of the cabin, pressed the call button to summon a flight attendant, the complaint continued.

“Flight Attendant 1 approached the passenger who asked for help and observed (Evan) initially put her head on the man’s shoulder,” it explained. “(Evan) then began screaming incoherently and punching her husband in the left shoulder and upper chest. Flight Attendant 1 called the other flight attendants to come over to help deal with the situation.’

In an attempt to defuse the tension, crew members asked Evan to move to another seat in the back of the plane, but she refused to budge. However, as mentioned, husband Evan agreed to move and took a free seat in the last row.

Second stewardess Was able to calm Evan down briefly, allowing the rest of the crew to finish preparing the cabin before arriving in Anchorage, the complaint said. But a few minutes later, a passenger in the sixth row activated the call button, according to the complaint.

Evan “was moving uncontrollably, swinging and disturbing the passengers around her,” it said. A flight attendant went over the public address system and asked for an “able-bodied person to assist,” and a nurse sitting nearby volunteered to sit next to Evan as the crew took their seats for boarding.

After the plane landed and began heading toward the terminal, a third flight attendant went to check on Evan “and found her hitting her head on the seat in front of her and flailing her arms wildly,” the complaint states. The flight attendant feared that Evan was going to injure the passengers who were nearby and called a colleague, who placed flexible handcuffs on Evan, the complaint states.

The document states that Evan “immediately calmed down” when she was restrained. The crew asked the tower for law enforcement to meet the plane, and FBIwhich has jurisdiction over crimes in flight, was also summoned.

Flight attendants told agents that Evan was served water and “one chardonnay” during the trip, and she “did not show signs of intoxication when she ordered the alcoholic beverage,” according to the complaint. But her husband, who had two beers while on board and did not appear drunk, is said to have admitted that Evan “had been drinking before boarding the plane due to her excitement about the flight”.

He recalled that Evan had “about two or three drinks before boarding the plane and two during the flight,” according to the complaint, which says Evan’s husband told investigators that his wife was “often angry with him and aggressive toward him , when she drinks alcohol.” because of previous relationship problems.”

“However, prior to or during this flight, no conversations regarding these prior matters were discussed,” the complaint states. “He believed her behavior became aggressive towards the end of the flight after she quickly drank the rest of her alcoholic drink. He described her behavior when she was tense and clutching things (,) or him (,) as normal, but banging her own head on the seat in front of her was not.’

The FBI also interviewed the off-duty man police officer, who was seated in the row behind Evan, and said he not only witnessed her alleged behavior aboard the plane, but also saw her in the Bethel terminal before takeoff, according to the complaint.

The officer described Evan as appearing “very intoxicated”, with “aggressive demeaning behavior (sic)”.

“He recalled watching (Evan) bump into people in the terminal before the flight,” the complaint states. “After bumping into them, she would turn around to stare at them, hug them as if apologizing, but then immediately get angry and aggressively yell at them, saying, ‘F*ck you bitches, f**king bitches.’ .’ He saw her husband trying to keep her with him and away from other people.”

Although the officer wore headphones for most of the flight and missed some conversations between Evan and others, the complaint says he told the FBI he heard one of the flight attendants tell her to calm down “because she wasn’t doing that.” I want to put her on the Alaska Airlines no-fly list.”

As for the nurse who had to help Evan relax, the officer said she “looked visually relieved when the airport police entered the plane, like she was exhausted from sitting next to (Evan).”

Evan refused to speak to law enforcement and was arrested for interfering with crew members, a federal charge that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. She was taken to Highland Mountain Correctional Center, where she was tested for alcohol and found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.25 percent, three times the legal limit to drive, according to the complaint.

The Federal Aviation Administration received 1,819 reports of uncontrolled passengers by 2024, a significant drop from 2021’s record high of nearly 6,000. In addition to criminal charges, violators can also face civil penalties of up to $37,000 per violation. According to the FAA, a single incident can result in multiple violations.

Evan, who does not yet have an attorney in court records, remains in custody and could not be reached for comment. She is scheduled to appear in federal court in Anchorage on Friday afternoon.
