The Nigerian Police has distanced itself from the unauthorized use of its uniform and insignia by social media influencer Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan.

Police said they have launched a full investigation to determine the source of the uniform and insignia worn by VeryDarkMan in one of his videos.

In the said video, the influencer was seen in full police uniform and gear, describing himself as a social media cop rather than an activist.

Condemning his act, the police said the influencer’s actions contravene Article 251 of the Penal Code and Article 133 of the Penal Code.

According to a statement on the official X Police page: “The Nigerian Police strongly condemns the unauthorized use of official uniform and equipment by an online personality, Mr. Martins Otse popularly known as “VDM” in a video posted on his social media. platforms.

“The force has unequivocally distanced itself from this unauthorized image and has launched a full investigation to determine the source of the police equipment used and the authority under which he was acting.

“It is important to remind the public that the unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia or equipment is a criminal offense under section 251 of the Criminal Code Act and section 133 of the Criminal Code Act and is subject to severe penalties. .

“While the Nigeria Police Force recognizes and supports the creativity of young Nigerians in the field of content creation, we strongly caution against the misuse of police uniforms or insignia. Unauthorized use of these items undermines the values ​​and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated.”
