Hyderabad, November 15 (IANS): Transgenders will be recruited as volunteers for organizing traffic and driving under the influence of alcohol in Hyderabad.

In the first phase, they will be deployed to manage traffic in busy areas of Greater Hyderabad.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has asked officials to appoint transgenders as traffic volunteers to tackle the growing traffic problems in the state.

He offered to use their services as a home guard. They will be placed at traffic junctions and will prevent signal skipping and other violations of traffic rules.

The head of the government also suggested using the services of transgenders to check for drunkenness and driving. As the areas under all the three commissionerates of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda have seen a spike in cases of drunken driving, he said transgenders may be posted at the check posts.

He asked officials to finalize a special dress code for transgender people, as well as to fix the salary at the level of the military.

He wanted officials to implement the solution on an experimental basis as soon as possible.

In September, it was decided to recruit transgender people as traffic volunteers in Hyderabad. Officials have been asked to collect information about transgender people who want to volunteer for traffic management.

The Head of the Government offered to conduct the necessary training for them in the organization of traffic from a week to 10 days.

Officials say that appointing transgenders as traffic volunteers will not only be a source of income but will also give them respect in the society.

The move to hire transgender volunteers comes amid increasing traffic congestion in Greater Hyderabad due to the ever-increasing number of vehicles.

In July, the Cyberabad Police, with the support of IT companies, launched the ‘Traffic Marshals’ initiative to promote smooth traffic in Cyberabad, especially in the IT corridor.
