New details of the shooting in the Alayt apartment became known.

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – The Casey Police Department has confirmed there are more than three suspects in the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Jalen Allen in September

Allen was shot and killed while driving a vehicle in the parking lot of the Radley apartment complex formerly known as Alight. Lt. Kevin Blake told WIS that a woman pregnant with Allen’s child was in the passenger seat when Allen was shot.

After the shooting, Allen drove into several cars in the parking lot and a University of South Carolina student who was walking in the middle of the road during the incident, officials said.

Blake said several arrests will be made as part of this investigation, and there are currently more than three suspects.

“What makes it difficult is that our very small group of suspects are juveniles,” Blake said.

In addition, Blake told WIS that all three juvenile suspects are “connected to gang activity.”

Officials are currently awaiting a forensic analysis of items believed to be related to Allen’s death.

“Thanks to the search warrants, we obtained some items that are currently being tested at SLED for DNA,” Blake said. “Once we get that back, we’ll be in a good place.”

Several agencies were called in to assist in the investigation, including the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the West Columbia Police Department, the Secret Service and the Lexington County Dive Team, officials said.

Blake told WIS that the dive team was called in response to extensive evidence related to the case found in the Congaree River near the entrance to the West Columbia Amphitheater.

“There were some interesting things that came out of the water, and as far as the person who put them in the water, we know who they are, and when the analysis is done, they’re going to have some problems,” Blake said.

Blake could not confirm whether the items taken were weapons.

Since January, officials said, there have been 91 incident reports from the complex, 15 of which are classified as violent crimes. These numbers do not reflect the number of calls received by law enforcement about the complex, only reported incidents.

The 22 “informational” reports mean that no charges have been filed, but law enforcement agencies have taken reports of events for informational purposes, according to city officials.

Blake said they continue to communicate with Allen’s family.

“We’d like to tell them everything, but we don’t want this case closed,” Blake said. “It’s hard not to tell the grieving mother or parents and family that this is what we know happened because we will eventually be able to tell them. They will be missed for a long time. There will be a child who does not know his father. I can’t imagine what they’re going through.”

Last month, the complex passed into new ownership. Blake was unable to tell WIS if the new ownership added security measures after the property was sold.

Blake said the complex has two officers who live in the complex and cameras that were used during the investigation.

“There’s an effort to work with the police department to help deal with the issues that come out of there,” Blake said.

There is an additional patrol in the residential complex.

“You can look at the end-of-shift reporters that come in every day shift and every night shift and they show an extra patrol for 800 Alexanders,” Blake said.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing, but available evidence suggests it was an isolated incident.

“All the parties involved were talking to each other to meet at the apartment complex, these people came together by chance,” he said.
