Cops propose to MRT to revoke the rights of 200 drunken drivers

Pune: The city police has asked the RTO to cancel 200 driving licenses after booking 1,000 people for driving while intoxicated this month
Notice of cancellation of 200 licenses sent to Pune RTO (Regional Transport Administration). Since October 11, the Pune city police have fined around 1,000 motorists for drunken driving.
The police authorities began to send proposals to the MTO regarding the cancellation of the rights of drivers who drive vehicles while intoxicated, having recorded a large number of such cases. Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil told TOI, “So far we have asked the RTO to cancel driver’s license 200 motorists caught driving their vehicles in a drunken state.
On Saturday, TOI made repeated attempts to reach senior RTO officers over phone in this regard, but none of them returned calls.
Patil said, “We have stepped up our drive against drunken drivers since October 11 following the Mundhwa accident in which a food vendor (21) was killed after a luxury car driven by a drunk businessman rammed into his two-wheeler. The driver fled after the accident.”
Before the fatal accident, the same car driver hit a scooter, injuring three people.
Police use disposable breathalyzers and calibrated breathalyzers to crack down on drunk drivers at 27 different locations every day. Previously, such trips were limited to weekends.
So far, the police have prepared 14 flying squads with 125 traffic police officers for night duty. These teams occupy all 27 places. The location of the spots changes daily. An officer in the rank of assistant police commissioner leads an action against drunken drivers every night.
“We are covering all major city roads, highways and internal roads as part of our drive against drunk driving. We receive at least 40 cases of drunk driving every day. On some days, the figure exceeds 100. These motorists are not only careless with their lives, but also pose a threat to other road users,” said Patil.
In May this year, a minor boy’s Porsche Taycan rammed into a motorcycle, killing two technicians in Kalyannagar. Police detained the boy and took action against the bar and pub operators who had served him and his friends with alcoholic drinks just minutes before the accident.
