Dogs abandoned on the side of the road, with a soulful note

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (WPTV) – Two dogs are looking for a new home after they were dumped on a dirt road in Florida with a heartbreaking note pleading for help.

The dogs, Mella and Rocky, are happy and friendly, as their owner described them when they wrote in black marker on their sleds and left them on the road at Jupiter Farms. Inside the harness were the dogs’ medical records and a note asking to help them.

The note read: “I’m very sorry, but I ran out of time and options.”

Sarah Johnson adopted the dogs on Tuesday and handed them over to manager Janelle Marron at Furry Friends Animal Rescue.

“It’s very sad to know that people are ready, willing and able to just abandon their dogs,” Johnson said.

Salvage is crowded on Jupiter, but Marrone makes room for Mella and Rocky.

“It’s pretty crazy that they got dumped like that,” she said.

Abandoning an animal is a misdemeanor in Florida, but Marrone says it’s still very common. She says shelters are overcrowded and people don’t have a place to take their pets. Even the Palm Beach County shelter is experiencing a two-month wait for turn-in.

“People just panic and don’t know what to do and abandon their dogs. It’s really terrible,” Marrone said.

Furry Friends plans to contact Mella and Rocky’s owners, who are listed in the dogs’ medical records. Marrone wants to know why this happened.

Meanwhile, the rescue service prepares dogs for adoption.

“I really hope that these dogs will be adopted very quickly and together. They are so sweet. In the short time they were with us, they were a real treasure,” Johnson said.
