Straight Talk Wireless 400 field

Kyle Larson, the winner of the 2022 Homestead-Miami race, remains the consistent favorite to qualify for the Straight Talk Wireless 400. He is followed by last year’s winner Christopher Bell, as well as Tyler Reddick and William Byron, all under +1,000. Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney can also be found in the +1000 range.

Joey Logano, already in the Championship 4, is the longest-rated playoff rusher at +1,700 on DraftKings, followed by Chase Elliott at +1,400.

Straight Talk Wireless 400 Expert Picks and Predictions

The odds below are provided DraftKings Sportsbook as of 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

The Straight Talk Wireless 400 is a pre-selection favorite

Kyle Larson (+330)
Homestead is most similar to Darlington, and Kyle Larson won the Southern 500 in 2023 and led 263 of 367 laps, including completing both stages there over Labor Day weekend. He also led 199 of 267 laps in his 2022 Homestead win. Before his crash on lap 214 at Homestead last year, Larson had led 96 laps and finished first and third, respectively, in a pair of stages. Larson has five top-5 finishes in his last eight starts at Homestead with two-round scores of 132, 145, 45, zero, five, 199 and 96, respectively.

Tyler Reddick (+600)
This is his race and his type of track. Tyler Reddick was fourth in 2020, second in 2021 and third last year. Although he retired from the competition at the start of 2022 with his only result worse than fourth at Homestead, he has also finished second in two of the last three Southern 500s at Darlington.

Christopher Bell (+600)
The defending winner has two top-10 finishes in four Homestead Cup attempts. Christopher Bell was 13th and third respectively at Darlington this season.

William Byron (+700)
The 2021 winner has three top-10 finishes in his last four attempts at Homestead, including a fourth-place finish last season. William Byron has also finished in the Top 6 three times in his last four starts at Darlington.

Ryan Blaney (+1000)
Ryan Blaney’s two top-three finishes in his last four starts at Homestead include second to Bell last season.

Ross Chastain (+1700)
Ross Chastain is two playoff wins short of a championship. The estate can be the third. This season at Darlington he finished 11th and fifth respectively, and in 2022 he finished second in that race.

Kyle Busch (+1800)
Kyle Busch has six top-6 finishes in his last nine starts at Homestead, including four top-4 finishes. Busch had a car capable of winning the Southern 500 this year, but instead finished second.

Ty Gibbs (+2,200)
Ty Gibbs finished second at Darlington this spring and seventh in that race last year.

Straight Talk Wireless 400 disappears

Denny Hamlin (+1000)
Denny Hamlin won both stages in 2020, but I’m giving him up. That’s because Hamlin has finished 11th, seventh and 30th, respectively, in the last three years, and his three wins in 2009, 2013 and 2020 were his only top-5 finishes in his last 16 attempts.

Chase Elliott (+1400)
Chase Elliott has three top-7s in his last six starts at Homestead, but he’s also winless here and at Darlington, too. He was 12th and 11th at Darlington last year and 15th in his last time out at Homestead.

Martin Truex Jr. (+1600)
Three top-2 finishes in his last six Homestead attempts and a car capable of winning in 2022 before a botched pit stop at the last one. Still, Martin Truex Jr. finished 29th last year and 25th and 36th, respectively, at Darlington this season.

Joey Logano (+1700)
Prior to 2020, Logano had ranked fourth, fourth, sixth, first, and fifth, respectively, over the five-year period. Ever since? 27th, 25th, 18th and eighth.

Straight Talk Wireless 400 Prop Picks: RFK Racing Duo Top 5 Finals

Last year, Brad Keselowski qualified fourth, led four times over 16 laps and finished second and fifth in two stages. A 28th-place finish was a toss-up because the No. 6 Ford had speed. He finished fifth in 2022 and was fourth and sixth at Darlington last year, having won there last spring.

His teammate Chris Buescher won the opening stage here in 2021, including leading 57 laps. However, contact on the second restart ruined his handling, dropping him out of the top 15. Buescher is best on old tracks. He faced the leader at Darlington this spring and finished sixth in the Southern 500.

Select: Keselowski & Buescher each in the Top 5 (+775 on DraftKings)

Analysis of the Homestead-Miami route

Homestead Miami is most similar to Darlington in that both tracks feature high tire wear and the same drivers competing for wins at both. Generally, if someone does well one year at Darlington, they will also do well at Homestead, and vice versa. That being said, Ford has beaten Darlington this season but has just one win here in the last 13 years.

Toyota has won three of the last five Homestead races, including five of the last seven, making them one to watch. However, Chevrolet won that race in 2022, and HMS drivers have won two of the last four at Homestead.

  • Eight of the last 11 winners came from the top 5 starting line-up.
  • Since NASCAR began using stage breaks in 2017, the eventual winner is 13-for-14 with stage points.
  • In fact, 12 of the 14 stages saw the eventual winner finish in the Top 5. The only exception is Bell, who finished ninth last year and had no points for the stage, respectively.
