The suspect, boda boda operator Moses Makau Ndunda.

Police in Kayole, Nairobi County have arrested a boda boda operator for allegedly possessing a firearm that was reportedly stolen from a DCI officer attached to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) in August.

Moses Makau Ndunda, a boda boda operator who worked near the Saika stage, was arrested by authorities following a tip-off from members of the public.

He later led the police to his residence in Dandora, where the stolen Ceska pistol was found.

“After questioning, he led the police to his residence within Phase II of Dandora, where he lives with his wife and two children. During the search, a Ceska S/NO.KE KP A048878 pistol loaded with 14 rounds of 9mm ammunition was found there,” a police report documenting the incident reads in part.

“The same was reported to have been robbed from PC No. 120531 of Peter Mburu Irungu attached to ATPU Nairobi. Also detained was a motorcycle, registration number KMGC 305P, brand Lefan, red color.

Irungu said the gun was stolen on August 17, 2024 after a night out in Mihango area along the Eastern Bypass with two of his friends, Charles Nyunge and another person identified only as Alvin.

According to a police incident report, the trio had been drinking at an establishment located in the Eagle Business Center around 9:30 p.m., before moving on to another location called Click.

“After drinking, the officer alleges they proceeded to a nearby establishment called Click, located at the Astrol gas station approximately 600 meters from the Eagle Centre. They enjoyed themselves until approximately 02:00 when they left,” the police report said.

“He stated that he then went to his parents’ residence located at Green Court Mihang’o.”

Irung’u claimed that he was approached by two people on a boda boda before he arrived at his mother’s residence.

They reportedly escaped with a Ceska pistol S/N A048878 loaded with 15 9mm rounds, a wallet containing an officer’s appointment card and bank cards and a Nokia C32 mobile phone.

“Stapole Mihango and DCI Kayole’s team immediately attended the scene. The team proceeded to Eagle Business Center and Click Wine and Spirit where the officer had been drinking. It was noted that there were CCTV cameras. The team also visited the residence of the officer’s parents at Green Court Mihango,” – says the police report.

“The wife of the officer, Elizabeth Nyawira, confirmed that he left the house armed on the morning of 08/17/2024. Although the police officer stated that he was robbed on Gesora Road, he could not pinpoint the location of the alleged incident.”

Irungu was later placed under arrest to assist in the investigation.

“The officer was taken into custody, appearing drunk with bruises on his mouth, elbows and right knee, wearing torn pants and a t-shirt to assist in the investigation…”
