Where to see peak fall foliage in New England the weekend of October 26-27

Fall leaves in northern New England are gone, but there’s still time to see vibrant colors north of Massachusetts.

That said, fall colors are still at their peak in parts of southern New England, including Massachusetts, according to the data Yankee magazine. Most of the Bay State is seeing the colors reach their peak, and parts of Western Massachusetts are already past that point.

“Northern Connecticut was awash with color last week, and it will continue to be this week as vibrancy grows across the state,” the magazine wrote. “Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts should also be bright, along with the Connecticut River Valley from Long Island Sound through Massachusetts and into southern New Hampshire and Vermont.”

Yankee provided several recommendations for seeing the bright colors, including the Holyoke Range south of Amherst and the Blue Hills near Boston. Elsewhere, they emphasized “the beauty of past peak colors.”

“The bright early maples may have fallen, but the oaks and beeches quickly appeared along the Maine and New Hampshire coasts,” says Yankee. “It transitioned smoothly into a wonderful past peak flavor of yellows, rusty oranges, maroons and merlots.”

First of all, Yankee suggested that travelers go to York, Maine, located in the center of these peak colors of the past.

“Start your day with an iconic one Nubble Light for sunrise, which is now about as late as it’s been at any time of the year, although daylight saving time will correct that next weekend,” the magazine reported.

Spend some time by the ocean before sitting down for breakfast at Stonewall Kitchen along Route 1, in front of Mount Agamenticus, the magazine said. Mount Agamenticus offers several options “for exploration, including a summit road and an excellent network of trails,” Yankee forecasters wrote.

Come midday, head back to the coast and cross the Wiggly Bridge to “take a beautiful nature walk along the tidal flats of the York River,” Yankee wrote. Head upriver on Route 1 and visit the York River Landing Restaurant for dinner, “with great food, an impressive tap list, and plenty of seating overlooking the river.”

Along with York, Yankee also recommended visiting Alton, New Hampshire; Pomfret, Connecticut; and Hadley, Massachusetts.

Massachusetts residents watching fall foliage in the Bay State can take a look Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreationmap of autumn leaves. As of Friday, most of the state is indeed at its peak.

According to the DCR map, fall coloration in Windsor State Forest, Savoy Mountain State Forest and Natural Bridge Forest along the northern edge of Western Massachusetts are located in the part of the state where coloration has passed.
