Kerrville Juvenile Court has its first session | News

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, Kerrville Municipal Court successfully completed the inaugural session of the Kerrville Teen Court program, where teenagers defended, prosecuted and sentenced three defendants who agreed to participate in the program. Guilt and innocence were not decided by a six-person jury; punishment was the only issue considered in the juvenile court. If the juvenile defendant successfully completes the juvenile court program, the charge is dismissed.

Municipal Court Judge Lucy Pearson presided over 11 local teenagers who were attorneys representing the state of Texas and individual teen defendants. These teenagers performed all the duties of a lawyer: they made opening statements, questioned witnesses, including the police officer who wrote the report, and made closing statements to the teenage jury.
