Kerrville Juvenile Court has its first session | News

Judge Pearson spoke on behalf of supporters of the Kerrville Teen Court program when she expressed the idea that all of these teen participants “serve and contribute to the well-being of our community.”

“The young people participating in the program (as lawyers and jurors) have shown themselves to be professional and mature,” she said. “(Nobody) would have known it was their first time in a courtroom.”

Judge Pearson also expressed hope that the juvenile court process helps juvenile attorneys and juries as much as it does juvenile defendants.

“Each of these students can take the skills they learn here into their adult lives in public speaking and working with others,” she said.

The Kerrville Teen Court staff would like to acknowledge that without these teen volunteers from Tivey Middle School, Our Lady of the Hills Catholic High School, Heritage School, Center Point Middle School and Hal Peterson Middle School, the Kerrville Municipal Court would not be able to offer this a deferment program for the youth of the district.

If any local teens are interested in a chance to join the Kerrville Teen Court Program, they are encouraged to contact Teen Court Coordinator Yesenia Luna at (830) 257-2388 or [email protected]. Interested youth will be asked to fill out an application, be interviewed by a municipal judge, municipal prosecutor and/or juvenile court coordinator and, if selected, attend a training session.
