School Board Races Reinstate by Several Pounds in Iron County Bulletin Nov. 5 | News, Sports, Work

School board races will highlight local contests on the Nov. 5 ballot in Iron County, as well as proposed mileage renewals for the Crystal Falls Community Library, Dickinson-Iron High School District and roads throughout Iron County.

Early voting begins today and runs through Sunday, Nov. 3 at Crystal Falls City Hall, Iron River City Hall, Bates City Hall and Mastodon City Hall.

The Crystal Falls site is for voters in the townships of Mansfield, Hematite and Crystal Falls, as well as the city of Crystal Falls. During nine days, early voting lasts from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Iron River site is for voters in Iron River and Stambaugh Townships, as well as Iron River, Gaastra and Caspian Townships. Working hours are daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Hours for Bates Township and Mastodon Township voters at their respective early voting locations are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily.

IRON COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

In District 1, incumbent Democrat Patti Peretto is unopposed.

In District 2, no candidate filed to be on the ballot.

In District 3, nonpartisan incumbent Mark Stauber is unopposed.

In District 4, nonpartisan Incumbent In Brutt is unopposed.

In District 5, nonpartisan incumbent Jacob Connery is unopposed.

IRON COUNTY ADMINISTRATIONS

All candidates for district office are incumbents and do not have a single vote. They are: Chad Derouen, Republican, prosecutor; Ryan D. Boehmke, Democrat, Sheriff; Amy Donati, Democrat, Clerk and Recorder of Deeds;

Melanie Kemps, Democrat, Treasurer; Thomas Carvala, Democrat, Mining Inspector; and Ron Frayling and Dan Hermick, Republicans, road commissioners.

In a nonpartisan race, Judge Donald S. Powell is unopposed for re-election as probate court judge.

IRON COUNTY ROAD MILLAGE

Proposed renewal of 0.5 million, or 50 cents for each $1,000 of taxable value, for the years 2025-2028 for the maintenance, repair and reconstruction of public streets, avenues and roads. That tax, which will expire with the levy in 2024, would raise about $345,594 in its first year. The towns of Caspian, Crystal Falls, Gaastra, Iron River and the Village of Alpha will keep the revenue, while the Iron County Road Commission will receive revenue collected in unincorporated areas of the county.

DICKINSON-IRON HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District is proposing a 10-year special education renewal of 0.4983 mills, or just under 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value. Estimated revenue in 2026 is $861,567. This gap is designed to provide funds for the education of students with disabilities.

CRYSTAL FALLS DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT

A five-year renewal of 1 million, or $1 per $1,000 of taxable value, is proposed for library services in the Crystal Falls County Public Library District. In 2026, this levy would generate approximately $209,040.

WEST IRON COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The district has eight candidates for the four school board seats: Mary Gillaspie, Michael Gorisky, Linnea Johnson, Andrew Oberlin, Gary Olson and incumbents Gary Pisoni, Ryan Meske and Ian Gill.

LISOPARKOVA SCHOOL OR-N

Six candidates for two six-year terms are on the ballot. They are Ryan Aho, Zach Hautala, Allen L. Jaeger, Brooke Poncho, and incumbents Debra J. Divocki and William S. St. John. Candidates on the ballot for a partial term through 2026 are April Anderson and Angela Stafford, although Stafford is not an active candidate. Tim Bendick is also running for a two-year term.

CASPIAN CITY

Three candidates filed for three council seats: Matt Jacks, Robert Ketchum and Gary Sabol. All active.

CITY OF CRYSTAL FALLS

The mayoral candidates are Tim Bean, Rob Damske and incumbent Mike McCarthy. There are no candidates for the two open councils in the city.

BATES TOWNSHIP

All candidates for municipal office are Republicans and are unopposed: Mike Stafford for Town Supervisor, Jane Adams and Michael Franzene for Trustee, Barbara Benson-Stafford for Clerk and Theresa Nelson for Treasurer. No one filed for constable.

CITY OF CRYSTAL FALLS

The candidates for county supervisor are Democrat Allen L. Jaeger, Republican Curtis Stebic, Libertarian Bob Black and unaffiliated Tom Stachovich. Scott Kenney, the appointed incumbent, is not seeking re-election.

Both trustee candidates are incumbent Democrats, Diane Coote and Joan Seppala. Democrats are not running for other positions: Nancy Niemi is clerk, Jennifer Ketola is treasurer.

THE CITY OF HAASTRA

All positions are unopposed: Richard Holm for mayor, Chris Kane and Marie Kay McNamara for two city commissioner positions, and Tony Holm for one at-large commissioner position.

THE CITY OF HEMATIT

Joseph A. Hoenig, nonpartisan, is not running for supervisor. Running for the two trustee seats are Carlin M. Raduechel, a Republican, and Dale Richardson, a nonpartisan.

The township has a race for constable: Republican Gordon Robinson and Kurt Colombino, nonpartisan. There are no other township positions: Vanessa Warren, nonpartisan, for clerk; Ashley Haag, nonpartisan, for treasurer.

IRON RIVER ST

Republican candidates for district offices have no foothold. They are Scott L. Tarsi, supervisor; Amber Latourie, Scribe; Marla J. Hill, Treasurer; and Westley Hill and Michael J. Sheehy, Trustees.

MANSFIELD TOWNSHIP

Republican candidates for district offices have no foothold. They are Brock VanOss, supervisor; John Leutz, clerk; Rosalie A. Poynter, Treasurer; and Mike Carey and George J. Minerick, Trustees.

MASTODONSKY SMT

There are no candidates for the positions of Alfa’s rural offices. They are Peter Lapin, president; Krystal L. Sedwick, Clerk; Molly Cameron, treasurer; and Jean S. Burge and Sharyl McCole, Trustees.

THE CITY OF STAMBO

There are no candidates for positions in the village. They are Kevin S. Isaacson, Republican, Supervisor; Margaret Christensen, Republican, Clerk; Sharon Rogers, Republican, Treasurer; and Dean Stolberg, Democrat, Trustee, and Sherry Pangrazzi, Republican, Trustee.
