A 7-year-old boy died in a drunken accident in east Detroit

DETROIT (FOX 2)A car ran a red light at 7 Mile and Mound just after 4:30pm today, colliding with another car and causing the death of a 7-year-old boy. His 5-year-old sister remains in serious condition after the accident.

A total of three cars were involved in the accident.

Detroit Police Deputy Chief Franklin Hayes said the crash on Detroit’s east side remains under investigation.

About two hours after the accident, the driver returned to the scene and surrendered.

“We have a great community,” Hayes said.

Hayes said a 25-year-old man who is not from Detroit was driving. No details of his identity were released prior to formal charges.

“Alcohol was a factor in this crash,” Hayes said.

According to Hayes, even two hours after the accident, the man’s blood alcohol level was in the double digits.

No one else was seriously injured in the crash, although other occupants of the vehicles suffered minor injuries from the collision.

“When that person turned himself in, (it) was a little bit of a relief,” Hayes said. “We will summarize today’s incidents and turn them over to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.”

Hayes said there were also three adults in the minivan carrying the children.

Two adults, a man and a woman, both in their 20s, were also hospitalized in serious condition; was released by the police a few hours after the accident.

Hayes said driving is a privilege and drunk drivers will be held accountable.
