Drunk driver rams car into road divider in Bhubaneswar, two injured

In a grim reminder of hit-and-run incidents involving drink-driving, a drunk man speeding in a Nissan Terrano crashed into a road divider after crashing into a road barrier, seriously injuring a couple in Damana Square, Bhubaneswar, late Saturday evening.

Other motorists and pedestrians on the road narrowly escaped death. The police reported that the man was driving under the influence of alcohol. The impact of the collision was so severe that the car skidded after hitting a pillar and subsequently crashing into a divider. As a result of the accident, the vehicle was completely damaged, and the accident site also needs repair.

A couple riding a scooter was hit by a car and seriously injured. Passers-by came to their aid and immediately called an ambulance, which took them to the capital hospital.

It was not immediately known where the drunk driver was returning from. According to reports, he was driving recklessly and tried to speed up at the Daman junction by jumping the traffic lights. However, he lost control and crashed into a traffic police post, later crashing into a separate lane.

The identity of the driver was not known. The rise in cases of drunken driving in the national capital Bhubaneswar has become a matter of serious concern.

Chandrasekarpur police could not be reached for comment on the matter.
