Hayward police say a man killed his father and hid the body in a dumpster

HAYWARD. A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of shooting his father to death at a Hayward warehouse and hiding the body in a dumpster in Union City, police said.

The case began Wednesday when family members requested a Social Security check on the father and son, according to a news release from the Hayward Police Department. The father did not show up for work earlier that day and did not answer his mobile phone.

Officers went to the warehouse in the 2000 block of American Avenue, but no one answered the door. A records check showed the son was on formal probation with a search warrant, which allowed officers to enter the building and conduct a “protective sweep,” police said.

Inside, the police found traces of a fatal shooting.

Detectives began investigating and determined that the son, identified as David Sanchez, was responsible for killing his 58-year-old father, police said.

On Thursday, detectives received a tip from Oakland police that Sanchez was in custody for an unrelated incident. Officers also requested a welfare check on Sanchez’s father based on statements he allegedly made during the investigation.

According to police, detectives told officers about the homicide investigation and took Sanchez into custody, who was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Sanchez told detectives about his father’s whereabouts, who found the man dead in a dumpster in the 33000 block of Central Avenue in Union City, police said.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s name once he has been formally identified.

The death was the city’s 13th homicide of the year.
