The Vicksburg Fire Department was battling more than just a house fire at 506 Speed Street Friday night.

Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps said that while firefighters were working to put out the flames, a dog bit two people in a crowd nearby.

“As crews were painstakingly winding up the hoses and securing them back to the truck, a sudden commotion broke out when the dog, who appeared to be frightened, charged into the crowd and bit two unsuspecting bystanders,” Stamps said, adding that both people were treated at the scene. . by ambulance and did not require transportation for further medical care.

As for the fire itself, Stamps said crews had the flames under control in a short amount of time.

“At approximately 5:37 p.m., the Vicksburg Fire Department received a call for a structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a thick column of smoke coming from all corners of the house, casting an ominous shadow over the scene,” Stamps said. “Determined to fight the fire, crews quickly launched an attack from the inside, working their way through the haze to determine the source of the fire. As they progressed deeper into the home, they discovered that the back floor was severely compromised, had burned through during placement and was a dangerous hazard. With relentless efforts, firefighters battled the blaze, their determination evident as they tried to bring the situation under control.”

Despite the quick response, Stamps said the damage was extensive and not just at the point of origin.

“Despite all efforts, the damage has spread to a nearby structure,” he said. “But fortunately, no one was hurt. The teamwork and dedication of the firefighters helped prevent more damage and protect the community.”

Stamps said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
