Hanover man pleads guilty to illegally dumping 250,000 tires in Allegany County

HANOVER, Md. — Michel Osei, 48, of Hanover, pleaded guilty to charges related to illegally dumping and leaving more than 250,000 used tires at a site in Allegany County, the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office announced.

The incident highlighted the collaborative efforts of local volunteer fire departments, state agencies and county officials to address the growing fire danger posed by the massive collection of tires. Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray emphasized the significant risks that inappropriate tire storage places pose to workers, the surrounding community and first responders.

“This investigation is an excellent example of a strong partnership between agencies,” Mowbray said, praising the efforts of all involved. “Inappropriate tire collection points pose a major fire hazard to staff, the community and our first responders. Across our country there are examples of fires these facilities can cause, which highlights the real danger.”

Officials said the State Fire Marshal’s Office, in cooperation with other agencies, will continue to work to reduce fire risks and enforce regulations to prevent similar incidents. Mowbray added that employees remain committed to making Maryland a fire-safe place to live, work and visit.
