Chicago rapper Lil Durk has been arrested in Broward County, Florida on a murder-for-hire charge.

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago-born rapper Lil Durk has been arrested in South Florida for conspiracy to commit murder, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the documents, Lil Durk, whose real name is Durk Devontay Banks, is being held by the US Marshals Service.

Banks is accused of being the leader of a Chicago rap group called Only the Family, which acts as a group of individuals who commit violence, including murder and assault, at Banks’ direction, according to a federal criminal complaint. The complaint was filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

He is accused of placing a “cash reward on an individual with whom Banks had a feud,” according to the complaint.

On Aug. 19, 2022, multiple OTF members allegedly used two vehicles and worked together to “track, monitor and attempt to kill TB at a gas station located in Los Angeles,” according to the complaint.

“The accomplices fired at least 18 shots at TB’s car, striking and killing a member of TB’s family who was riding with TB,” the complaint states.

The charges stem from the attempted murder of rapper Quando Rondo in 2022 at a Los Angeles gas station that killed Rondo’s cousin.

Banks is charged with conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire in the Aug. 19, 2022, shooting death of 24-year-old Saviai Robinson, according to an FBI affidavit released Friday.

According to the complaint, Banks is one of five co-conspirators charged in the incident, with crimes including murder, murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death.

According to a federal complaint, five people were allegedly paid to travel from Chicago to Los Angeles to commit the murder. All five people were arrested and locations linked to OTF members were searched.

At least two more may be arrested, according to court documents provided.

According to an affidavit by FBI agent Sarah Corcoran and other federal court records, the shooting stemmed from the November 2020 slaying of OTF rapper King Von, 26, at an Atlanta nightclub after Von and Rondo got into an argument. Records show Rondo’s friend pulled out a gun and shot Fon several times, killing him. Von, whose real name is Davon Bennett, had two hit singles, Crazy Story and “Took Her to the O.”

Authorities say Banks made it clear he would “pay a reward” to anyone who killed Rondo, whose real name is Tyquian Bowman.

Nearly two years later, the assassination plot quickly took shape, Corcoran wrote.

On August 18, 2022, Banks’ associates learned that Rondo was staying at a Los Angeles hotel. That day, Deandre Wilson, Kate Jones, David Lindsey, Asa Huston and a fifth, unnamed suspect, flew from Chicago to San Diego before traveling to Los Angeles with funds provided by Banks, Corcoran said.

That day, Banks allegedly texted his flight partner: “Do not book flights under any names associated with me.” Corcoran said there is video evidence that Banks was staying at the home in the San Fernando Valley that day.

Arriving in Los Angeles, the OTF members were met by Kayon Grant, who had flown there on a private jet. According to court records, Grant, a top OTF operative, got hotel rooms for the men, bought them four ski masks and two luxury sedans. Grant allegedly gave Jones, Lindsay and a third unnamed suspect guns, including one that had been converted into a fully automatic machine gun.

The next day, the group allegedly followed Rondo and Robinson as they drove a Cadillac Escalade to a marijuana dispensary in Los Angeles, a clothing store in West Hollywood, and then to a gas station across the street from the Beverly Center.

There, Houston parked his car outside the station so that Jones, Lindsay and the unnamed defendant could lay in wait for Rondo. They got out and opened fire, killing Robinson, who was standing outside the Escalade, but missing Rondo, according to the indictment and news reports about the shooting.

The suspects then went to an In-N-Out hamburger stand where they discussed payment with Grant before flying home to Chicago from San Diego, Corcoran and other documents said. Wilson allegedly later paid Jones and Lindsay an undisclosed amount.

Grant, Jones. Lindsey, Wilson and Houston were arrested Thursday in Chicago on conspiracy to commit murder. There was no information about the lawyers of these men in the court records.

After their arrest, Corcoran wrote, Banks booked two flights from South Florida airports – one to Dubai and one to Switzerland. He then booked a private flight to Italy, but was arrested in Miami before he could board the flight.

Banks made his first appearance Friday afternoon at the C. Clyde Atkins U.S. Courthouse in Miami. Banks’ attorney, Alec Ubieta, asked for confidentiality after leaving court, telling Miami ABC affiliate WPLG “we will not be commenting at this time.”

ABC News also reached out to Ubieta.

Banks’ family also left the court on Friday.

“We knew when the others were charged that it was a multi-player conspiracy, but the fact that he’s now being charged so close to the other charges suggests that it’s related to them and the conspiracy even broader than originally presented,” said legal analyst Gil Soffer.

As prosecutors move forward with the case, members of the OTF team will likely be used in the sentencing effort.

“They will no doubt try to expose someone involved in the conspiracy and use that evidence against other defendants, perhaps there is wiretapping involved. Perhaps there is undercover reporting. All of these pieces will come together to make a case against the defendants, Soffer said.

Banks’ arrest comes just weeks after he was named in a lawsuit alleging the rapper was involved in the 2020 fatal shooting of Chicago rapper FBG Duck, née Carlton Weekly.

Duck was murdered in the Gold Coast area by a group of masked men as he waited to enter an upscale store.

Six alleged gang members were convicted of Weekly’s murder.

Mother Weekly spoke with ABC7’s Karen Jordan after the lawsuit was filed.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t think about him and the life that was taken from him.” LaSheena Weekly, FBG Duck’s mother, said.

Lil Durk and his team have not commented on the lawsuit.

The town of Broadview, Illinois, took its key to the city from Lil Durk Friday.

“While the American justice system grants everyone the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law, in the village of Broadview, the court of public opinion holds an even higher moral and ethical standard of conduct. And our community partners must also reflect the same uncompromising standards that our residents demand. In light of the news that Durk “Lil Dark” Banks has been arrested in Florida and charged with murder for hire, the village of Broadview is revoking our honorary “key to the village” given to Durk. and terminates our partnership agreement with his youth organization, the Neighborhood Heroes Foundation, as mayor, protecting the interests of Broadway and advocating for the values of residents is my number one priority,” said Broadway Mayor Katrina Thompson.

The 32-year-old Chicago rapper won a Grammy earlier this year for Best Melodic Rap Performance for “All My Life” featuring J. Cole. His albums The Voice, released in 2020, and 7220, released in 2022, both went platinum. His new album was due out next month.

Lil Durk is one of the most popular rappers in the industry, a controversial subgenre of hip-hop that originated in Chicago and has been popularized by rappers such as Durk and Chief Keef, Fredo Santana and G Herbo. He is known for his often violent lyrics and association with Chicago gang culture.

If convicted of the crimes, Banks could face up to life in prison.

“The sentence is really harsh … it could even be the death penalty if there are enough aggravating circumstances,” Soffer said.
