A gunman fired multiple shots at cars on I-40 in Raleigh and Cary

A gunman opened fire on cars on a busy highway near the North Carolina capital this week, injuring one person, police said.

According to Raleigh police, several people reported a shooting in the area of Interstate 40 in Raleigh and Cary around 5 a.m. during the morning rush hour Wednesday. A total of six shootings have been reported in Wake County that authorities believe are related — two on Monday and four on Wednesday.

Police have not named a suspect.

“We’re going to do everything we can to identify and find those responsible,” Raleigh Deputy Principal Rico Boyce said at a news conference Wednesday.

There were no reports of injuries Wednesday, officials said. However, a few days earlier on Monday morning, a woman was shot in the leg on I-40.

Police say they do not believe the shooting was the result of road rage. Authorities said the shooter is suspected of using a handgun.

Finding the suspect is a priority for police because of how busy I-40 can be, Boyce said. Patrols will remain along I-40 until they find those responsible for the shooting, he said.

Police said another shooting at a vehicle was reported Thursday morning in southwest Raleigh — about 2 miles (3 kilometers) off I-40. The shooting is under investigation and police say it is not known if it is related to the interstate shooting.
