A minor went missing on Monday evening from her house in Vitala. Police said the couple allegedly planned to “sell” the minor. They were detained, the law enforcement officers said. Police have not released their names to protect the identity of the minor.

A police report in this regard was filed on Tuesday after the minor’s parents tried to find her. A senior police officer said, “There was no ransom call or motive for the kidnapping. At first, we suspected that the minor had run away with a friend. A case of kidnapping was opened, but nothing was found. We have sent teams to search, but they have not been able to trace the minor.”

The law enforcement officers reported that they checked the video surveillance cameras and found that the minor did not leave the settlement. Later on Tuesday, several teams were sent to the police to conduct door-to-door checks.

Rakesh Paveria, DCP (North East) said, “We received information that the juvenile was in the same colony. She was taken Wednesday from a house not far from her parents’ residence. She was kidnapped by a man.”

The senior officer added that the girl was found with “visible” injuries and in a semi-conscious state. “According to our information, a man kidnapped her when she was near the store. He pretended that he needed help with something and asked the girl for help. The girl agreed and went to his house. He then dragged her and held her hostage in his house. His wife is also involved as she lives in the same house. So far, we have established that the couple abused the minor. There is an assumption that the wife is also involved in the violence. The minor’s statement has yet to be recorded by a magistrate. We found evidence that the couple planned to sell it for further exploitation…,” he said.

The incident also angered local residents who allegedly attacked the accused after rescuing the minor. The police later recovered them and arrested the couple under Section 137 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (kidnapping). Officers said sections under the Pocso Act would also be added to the FIR.

Another knowledgeable police officer said that the accused and the minor’s family are acquaintances. “The motive is not very clear. Their houses are not too far away. We believe that the accused planned to sell the minor after sexual violence.”

Senior officers declined to share more details, saying it was a “sensitive” issue.

At the same time, after the rescue, the minor was sent for counseling. Her medical examination and other examinations are also being conducted, the police said.

“We are interviewing the minor about what happened. She is stable and is with counselors and CWC,” said the officer quoted above.
