Deadly night in Jackson… I’m your local reporter Darius Udris here in the east and in Washington, where police tell me the chase has ended, with one person dead and an officer injured.

Jackson police and Jackson County sheriff’s deputies say they were trying to stop a van whose driver allegedly shot and killed his brother in Lenawee County.

Authorities say the van was tracked to Jackson and the suspect then fled, shooting at police officers who were chasing the vehicle.

Witnesses say multiple shots were fired Wednesday night on Orange Street between East Henson and East Michigan avenues.

EYEWITNESS 1: “The glass immediately flew out.”
EYEWITNESS 2: “They stopped here and just shot… Glass was flying. You can still smell the gun.’

Witnesses say they saw a van fleeing the scene after the shooting, and police from multiple agencies gave chase through East Jackson — a chase that police said ended here, not far from striking Eaton workers.

Police say several cars and houses were fired upon during the pursuit. Fortunately, none of the passers-by were injured.

UAW Local 475 President Donnie Huffman says the chase went right through the strikers. He said some of them reported seeing the suspect reloading his weapon as he drove by. Huffman sent the workers home for the night.

Police say there was an exchange of gunfire between police and the suspect, which left the suspect dead and the officer injured.

The house on Orange Street was fenced off, as was the intersection of East and Washington, and another stretch of side streets a few blocks west of the Eaton plant.

Michigan State Police Special Investigations detectives are on scene. The injured police officer is expected to survive.
