5 teenagers arrested in crash that left St. Pete man dead far from home: SPPD

Five teenagers were arrested a few days after St. Petersburg A road accident that killed a 70-year-old man who was just a few meters from his house.

The St. Pete Police Department said the teenagers, between the ages of 12 and 15, face multiple charges in connection with the Monday, October 21, crash.

Edward Webb, 70, was struck and killed by a stolen Jeep while walking on 9th Avenue South near his home, investigators said. According to police, the vehicle was traveling north on 12th Street South and turned onto 9th Avenue South when it was struck.

The SUV drove off after hitting Webb and was later found abandoned a few blocks away, police said.

Authorities said a 14-year-old boy was identified as the driver of the stolen SUV, and four other teenagers were in the car at the time of the crash. SPPD officials have not released the names of the teenagers involved.

Just a day after the crash, Webb’s wife, Jeanette Chaniel, said her husband was on his way home from work when he was hit by a car. Webb’s family said he owned an air conditioning business.

Shaniel said Webb has a son, daughters, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. According to Shaniel, he was known as someone who always made people laugh.

“Without regard for human life,” said Chaniel. “Senseless act. Took someone’s life and didn’t even have the decency to turn around and stop.”

Police are now working with the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office to charge all five teenagers, officials said.

The 14-year-old driver was arrested for third-degree murder (felony murder), vehicular homicide while leaving the scene, driving without a license causing death and grand theft auto, authorities said. The other teenagers face charges of third-degree murder (felony murder) and grand larceny.
