Jamestown Fire Department extinguishes barrel fire Tuesday – Jamestown Sun

JAMESTOWN. The Jamestown Fire Department extinguished a barrel fire on Tuesday, Nov. 5, Fire Chief Jim Reiter said.

The department was dispatched to 601 2nd St. at 4:40 p.m. SW.

“It was reported that the barrel was on fire,” Reuter said.

Twenty-one firefighters and two units responded and were on the scene for about 10 minutes, he said. Only the metal barrel is damaged.

“This was an unauthorized and illegal burning within city limits,” Reuter said.

The Jamestown City Council approved a fire ordinance in August, he said.

“You just can’t burn anything,” Reuter said. “The only thing you can burn within city limits is your campfire, a legal campfire, and it has to be covered with a screen, it has to be wood and … we’re not talking about wood or any of that.”

According to him, this is wood that could be used for a bonfire.

“It’s the only thing you can burn,” he said. “No leaves, nothing, because there were also people in the city who burned leaves. We were not called to them, but I know that there were. But none of it can be burned.”

Violation of the ordinance is a misdemeanor punishable by a minimum fine of $250. A second offense within a year carries a minimum fine of $750 under Ordinance #1581, which can be found at jamestownnd.gov.

From time to time, our editorial team reports articles under the heading “staff”. Often, the byline “staff” is used when transcribing major news stories that come from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and that require little or no reporting. This attribution line is sometimes used when a news story has multiple authors or when a story is created by combining previously reported news from different sources. If external sources are used, this is noted in the story.
