The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said it happened just before 8:30 Monday evening near the Marquette interchange. Harris just finished rally in Brookfield when a car moving in the opposite direction bypassed her motorcade.

Prosecutors said Wacker appeared to be traveling at “close to highway” speeds. He was pulled over near 13th Street and deputies said he had a “very strong odor of intoxication, bloodshot and glassy eyes and extremely slurred speech.”

Wacker told deputies he was on his way home from a Walker’s Point bar and “didn’t know” he was driving the wrong way on the interstate, the complaint said. He was taken to the nearby Milwaukee Intermodal Station for field sobriety tests, and the complaint states that a preliminary breath test showed a BAC of 0.252.

Pending a blood draw as part of the OWI investigation, prosecutors said Wacker told deputies he “doesn’t remember” entering the freeway or nearly hitting another vehicle. He also said he had no idea Harris was there Milwaukee and had no intention of harming her or anyone in her campaign.

Prosecutors said Wacker has not been charged with OWI in the case. However, the complaint states that Wisconsin Department of Transportation records show he had a previous OWI conviction in 2000 — meaning the offense does not count under the state statute and it would be treated as his first OWI offense if charged will be submitted later.

The US Secret Service said it is aware of the incident and is grateful to MCSO deputies. The agency declined an interview request from FOX6 News earlier this week.
