Texas drunk driver’s emotional reaction as she gets 43 years for killing cop

A Texas drunken driver convicted of a fatal hit-and-run that killed a police officer while he was directing traffic broke down and cried as she was sentenced to 43 years in prison.

Lavilia Spry, 43, broke down in tears as she was sentenced Thursday for the death of Harris County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ramon Gutierrez, 45, in a crash nearly three years ago.

She was drunk when she drove around emergency vehicles and hit Gutierrez while he was standing in the road, escorting traffic, before fleeing the scene.

Tributes poured in for father-of-three Gutierrez, with loved ones describing him as an “amazing man” as victim impact statements were read to Spry before she began her sentence.

At the end of the trial, a jury found Spry guilty of intoxication manslaughter after only 15 minutes of deliberation.

The accident happened on the evening of January 24, 2022, when Gutierrez was working on a motorcycle, escorting a heavy load on the roadway. He reportedly worked overtime at the time to pay for his daughter’s upcoming wedding.

At that time, Gutierrez got off his motorcycle, wearing a reflective jacket and a flashlight, and emergency vehicles were nearby.

Spry, who had given birth just a month before the incident, drove around the ambulances and ran over the sergeant, dragging him a short distance.

Officials said she continued driving and fled the scene before being stopped and arrested a short time later by an officer following her.

Arresting officers said she appeared ill and attempted to resist arrest when taken into custody.

Gutierrez was airlifted to a hospital but died from his injuries. He served with HCSO for 13 years and was described by HSCO Sheriff Ed Gonzalez as an “outstanding” officer who provided “exemplary service.”

Gonzalez said Gutierrez was “loved” by his colleagues and the scars of his death “will forever be there” in his department.

Following Spry’s arrest, her bond was revoked and increased to $50,000 after she was found to have violated the terms of her bond because her SCRAM monitoring device detected alcohol in her system, ABC13 reported.
