Teen involved in Gilbert barn fire gets probation and community service

GILBERT, AZ (AZ Family) — A teenager convicted of setting fire to a barn in Gilbert has learned his punishment for the crime.

On Monday, court officials confirmed that one of the unnamed teenagers was released to his parents and placed on one year of probation.

The teenager was sentenced to 120 days of suspended jail time and 20 weeks of suspended ankle supervision.

If the teen fails the probation or community service requirements, he or she will be ordered to complete that sentence.

Officials are not releasing the teenager’s name because he was convicted in juvenile court.

The teenager was also ordered to complete 40 hours of community service in connection with fires or burns, as well as complete two educational packages.

The barn fire occurred on July 3 near the village of Gigli and Guadalupe Roads. Later, the police detained him two teenagers in connection with the fire.

Janie Jones, the owner, said her teenage daughter was hanging out with friends in the loft inside the barn when a separate group of teenagers showed up uninvited.

She said the boys threw fireworks into the barn-like garage. Video from surveillance cameras in the shed shows a flash and teenagers inside running away.

later, the family reported that they believed the group of teenagers also set off massive fireworks displays around his neighborhoods in Gilbert.

A restitution hearing is set for January 24, 2025.
