Postal worker accused of dropping political mail in Orange County

At least one postal ballot and several pieces of campaign literature were among the discarded items.

A US Mail contract worker is accused of throwing away 1,000 pieces of mail — including at least one ballot and 400 political letters — on Tuesday in Orange County instead of delivering mail just before the Nov. 5 election. according to a new federal criminal complaint.

Ottis Nicole McCoy Jr. dumped the mail in a cul-de-sac in Alafaya Woods, authorities said in a criminal complaint filed Friday in the U.S. District Court’s Orlando Division.

McCoy’s suspicions arose after another employee helped him load the day’s route that morning, and McCoy left “with a very large amount of U.S. mail” to deliver on Tuesday, but instead finished the route earlier than expected, the complaint said.

McCoy’s boss at Cummings Contract Delivery Service Corp checked the GPS under McCoy’s car and saw that the postal worker had deviated from his route. Another delivery worker pulled up to the vacant lot and found mail scattered on the ground and in bushes, federal documents said.

The United States Postal Inspection Service was notified of the incident, the criminal complaint said.

The landlord who lived on Lalique added to the evidence against McCoy lane at st cul-de-sac and had surveillance video that showed McCoy arriving at 5:14 p.m. and throwing away the mail.

The federal court filing includes screenshots of surveillance video and photos of the mail.

The U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the Orange County Supervisor of Elections Glen Gilzean did not immediately respond to Florida Politics’ request for comment.

Court records do not say who is representing McCoy.

The criminal case comes as early voting continues in an election that has major implications for the presidential race, as well as several statewide and Orange County initiatives and competitive local races.
