Federal authorities monitor the UK’s compliance with the voting rights law

COLUMBIA, South Carolina. The US Department of Justice has announced that it will monitor South Carolina’s voting rights laws on Election Day.

The department’s civil rights division is coordinating the effort, officials said.

Staff will contact state and local officials “as needed” on November 5.

NO SELFIES:

  • The South Carolina Department of Law Enforcement is reminding voters not to take pictures of their ballot. SLED says these “ballot selfies” are illegal in South Carolina. Voters are not allowed to use the camera inside the voting booth. The exact law says that a person who takes a selfie on a ballot can be found guilty of a misdemeanor and, if convicted, must be fined not more than $100 or imprisoned for not more than one year.

If someone has trouble voting in South Carolina, the Department of Justice encourages them to file a complaint with civilrights.justice.gov or by calling toll free at 800-253-3931.

Anyone with specific complaints related to a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act can contact the department’s information hotline at 800-514-0301 or 833-610-1264 or file a complaint through their website ada.gov.
