According to AZFamily, Ashcroft told the dispatcher that “something really bad happened” and that he was at home with his father and two brothers.

His brother then told dispatch that the 18-year-old and his mother went for a walk together, but only Ashcroft returned.

Police now say the suspect in the killing is a teenager. Police arrived at his home that day and Ashcroft tried to flee, AZFamily reported.

Ashcroft did not run, however, and authorities found the 18-year-old with self-inflicted wounds, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said. Ashcroft “asked deputies to shoot him in the head” and claimed he was “not innocent,” AZFamily reported, citing court documents.

According to AZFamily, investigators say Ashcroft killed his mother by pinning her down and stabbing her in the neck. Court documents also show that Ashcroft and Collier argued and did not speak to each other for three days, the newspaper reported. Ashcroft reportedly shouted “I hate you” to his mother the night before she died.

“I just don’t know how someone can be so mad and angry that their first thought is to go and just kill somebody, let alone your mother,” Ritchie told 12News.

Collier’s niece, Zelle Harwell, launched a GoFundMe after her death. The GoFundMe has raised more than $12,000 as of Nov. 4.
