Amazon offers AI-powered generative summaries for Prime Video

Amazon offers AI-powered generative summaries for Prime Video

Instead of scouring the web for a TV show synopsis, which often risks inadvertently revealing major plot points, Prime Video’s latest feature aims to keep viewers safe from any spoilers.

Amazon announced on Monday is the launch of “X-Ray Recaps,” an AI-powered generative feature that creates condensed recaps of entire seasons, individual episodes, and even parts of episodes. Notably, the company claims that the fences have been installed to prevent the AI from generating spoilers, so you can fully enjoy your favorite series without the fear of coming across unwanted information.

The new feature is an extension of streamers’ existing X-Ray feature, which displays information when you pause the screen, such as cast details and other tidbits.

To use Recaps, go to a TV show’s details page, where a new rewind icon will let you choose from three options: recap the current episode, recap the entire season so far, or recap the previous season.

X-Ray Recaps is currently in beta and will only be available to Fire TV customers in the US. At launch, users will have access to this feature for all Amazon MGM Studios original titles, including Daisy Jones and Six, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Wheel of Time and The Boys.

It will be available for additional devices later this year.

As the company explained in its blog, the feature uses a combination of custom AI models (built with Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker) to analyze video, subtitles and dialogue to describe key events, conversations and other information.

Amazon also noted that the feature is completely personalized to the moment you’re browsing. So whether you’re at the beginning of a new episode just minutes away, mid-season, or revisiting a series you’ve forgotten about, X-Ray Recaps can provide quick snippets of scenes happening in real time.

The announcement of Prime Video came immediately after the release of its competitor Google TV Results generated by AIa similar tool that creates short annotations for TV shows and movies.
