LOS ANGELES – NBA reopened the investigation into alleged domestic violence 2021 incident involving Jackson Hayes following the release of new video from the night of the altercation. Hayes played for the New Orleans Pelicans at the time and still does now Los Angeles Lakers.

“In light of the media report and video released this morning, we are reopening our investigation,” NBA spokesman Mike Buss said. confirmed by ESPN.

The 24-year-old refused to speak to reporters during training on Sunday. However, Lakers head coach JJ Redick acknowledged the fact of the investigation.

“We obviously know the investigation has been reopened and we will cooperate fully,” Redick said after practice, according to ESPN. “But other than that, I’m not going to comment any further on that.”

In July 2021 in Los Angeles Police Department launched an internal investigation after Hayes was arrested following a physical altercation with police officers Woodland Hills.

An internal investigation found that an LAPD sergeant violated department policy by kneeling on Hayes’ neck for nearly 15 seconds during the altercation.

Hayes pleaded no contest to a felony count of unlawful imprisonment and resisting an officer. According to court documents, ten other charges against Hayes, including assault and vandalism, were dismissed as a result of his plea.

In June 2022, Hayes was sentenced to 450 hours of community service, 52 weeks of domestic violence classes and three years of probation.

The Lakers announced the signing of Hayes on July 6, 2023. In an interview with The Athletic, Rob Pelinka, the team’s vice president of basketball operations and general manager, said the Lakers did their due diligence and fully vetted the young big man.

“I think the most important thing is that we take these things very seriously and do a full review process,” Pelinka said. “Jackson was very sincere (with) his apology for dealing with it and moving beyond it to where he played a year or two in the NBA after that. It was something we felt he owned, took for it responsibility and will become a better person on the other side.”
