Bengaluru News: A 32-year-old man, identified as Shabarish, died of his injuries on November 2 after allegedly daring to sit on a box of firecrackers that was about to explode, police said on Monday. The tragic incident that took place on Deepavali involved Shabarish and six friends who were reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

According to police, a group of friends who had gathered in Bengaluru’s Konanakunte area on October 31 forced Shabarish to sit on a box of lit firecrackers. As part of the challenge, they promised to buy him an autorickshaw if he could pull it off, news agency PTI reported.

According to India Today, a senior police officer said that Shabarish, who was unemployed, accepted the dangerous risk with the hope of improving his future by winning the promised car.

The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, shows Shabarish’s friends retreating after setting fire to a firecracker box. A few minutes later, there is a loud explosion that knocks Shabarish to the ground. The footage shows him lying on the ground while his friends surround him.

The badly injured Shabarish was immediately taken to the nearest hospital by his friends. Despite medical intervention, he died of his injuries on November 2, police confirmed.

Konanakunte police arrested all the six friends involved in the incident. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru South) Lokesh Jagalasar confirmed the arrests and said the accused have been charged with culpable homicide and produced before the court, PTI reported.

DCP South Lokesh said Shabarish was unemployed and took up the challenge as he hoped to improve his future with an autorickshaw promised to him by his friends, India Today reported.
