A new threat known as Fake Call malware is becoming a serious problem for millions of Android users. This menacing malware is designed to steal banking information from smartphones and transfer that information to hackers. In addition, it intercepts incoming banking calls on users’ phones, posing a significant risk to those using online banking services.

The latest version of the Fake Call malware, first discovered by Kaspersky in 2022, has evolved into an even bigger threat. Reports suggest that this updated version allows hackers to remotely control smartphones. Cybersecurity firm Zimperium has sounded the alarm about this advanced malware, which uses a technique called Vishing, or voice phishing. With this method, users are targeted with fraudulent banking calls or voicemails.

Here’s how it works:

Hackers spread this malware to Android smartphones using APK files. When a user installs an APK app, the Fake Call malware prompts them to set it as the default dialer app and asks for various permissions. Users often unwittingly grant these permissions, allowing hackers to constantly access information about incoming and outgoing calls.

To avoid detection, this malware also uses a fake user interface to mimic legitimate user interfaces. It usually hides in third-party programs and dubious download platforms. By installing any app from an untrusted source or APK, users run the risk of allowing this malware to infiltrate their devices and gain control.

So how can you protect yourself?

  • To avoid this type of malware, remember to only download apps from the official Google Play Store.
  • Avoid installing apps from third party app stores or websites and avoid installing APK files.
  • Also, be careful when giving app permissions: Unnecessary permissions can give access to your phone’s camera, microphone, and more.
