Cornwall police laid drug and weapons charges following Thursday’s search

Two Cornwall residents face a number of charges following a search on Champagne Avenue Thursday morning.

As part of the investigation, which involved the Criminal Investigation Division, the Street Crime Unit and the Cornwall Emergency Response Team, the search warrant led to the seizure of various items that police allegedly had in the possession of the two individuals, including a loaded 12-gauge shotgun, various types of ammunition, several other prohibited weapons, quantities of methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine, and large quantities of Canadian and US currency. Both people were detained by the police.

Patrick Joanette, 33, was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; unauthorized possession of firearms; unauthorized possession of weapons; eight counts of possessing a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order; two counts of negligent storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition; knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearms; possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine; possession of a List I substance for the purpose of trade – heroin; possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000; as well as violation of the release order for possession of weapons, ammunition, explosives and other devices. He was remanded in custody pending a bail hearing at Cornwall Crown Court.

She was released from police custody to appear at Cornwall Crown Court on November 28.

Prohibited driver, violation

A 27-year-old man from Akwesasne faces four charges after police responded to the point of entry on Thursday.

Officers alleged the man had breached restraining orders when he drove a vehicle after arriving at the point of entry. He was later handed over to the custody of Cornwall Police.

Nash Oakes, 27, was charged with two counts of operating while barred and two counts of breach of probation for breach of peace.

He was released from police custody to appear at Cornwall Crown Court on December 3.

Thefts, violations

A 27-year-old Cornwall woman faces five charges following a police investigation into a call from a business on Ninth Street.

Police said the woman breached the terms of her bond when she walked into a store with someone she wasn’t supposed to be with on Oct. 6 and then took merchandise out of the store without paying for it. She was taken into custody at the Cornwall Courthouse on Thursday.

Robin Torsti, 27, was charged with theft under $5,000; three counts of breach of bond for communicating and being with a certain person and breach of peace; and violation of probation for breach of peace.

She was remanded in custody pending a bail hearing at Cornwall Crown Court.

Theft, burglary

A 45-year-old man from Cornwall is facing three charges after police investigated a complaint from a business on Ninth Street.

The police claimed that on October 1, the man took the goods out of the store without paying for them. He was taken into custody at the police station on Thursday.

Jason Tio, 45, was charged with theft under $5,000 and two counts of violating probation for failure to keep the peace.

He was released from police custody to appear at Cornwall Crown Court on November 28.

Theft

A 35-year-old Cornwall woman has been charged after police investigated a complaint from a business on Ninth Street.

Police said the woman took the merchandise out of the store without paying for it on Oct. 1. She was taken into custody at the police station on Thursday.

Tala Shaver, 35, was charged with theft under $5,000.

She was released from police custody to appear at Cornwall Crown Court on November 28.
