Roy Keane warns Amorim he has three ‘big problems’ he needs to sort out as Manchester United go nowhere fast

Roy Keane warns Amorim he has three ‘big problems’ he needs to sort out as Manchester United go nowhere fast

Ruben Amorim has been warned he faces a huge task in reviving Manchester United, while a worried Roy Keane has named three pressing issues that need to be addressed, while Jamie Redknapp also gave a dire assessment of the stage their team is at.

The Red Devils have turned to Amorim as a replacement for the sacked Erik ten Heg, and the departing Sporting Lisbon boss will take his place on the hot seat from next Monday, November 11. Manchester United languishing in 13th place and with just three wins in 10 Premier League games, the 39-year-old’s famous manager hopes the only way is up at Old Trafford.

However, Keane sent Amorim a no-nonsense message about where United are as a club and said he must find a way for the players he inherits to work harder, not buckle when things go against them and score more goals if he is to have any chance of success.

“There are a few players in the United team in big positions who can’t run, which is a big problem,” Keane said on Sky Sports. “But they also have players in the team who don’t want to run, and when they do run, they don’t run hard enough, fast enough, long enough, so he has to carry that into the locker room, that mentality. Players who don’t, you should try to push them further.

“This team doesn’t run, that’s a big problem. They’ve got some really talented players, but if you’re not going to run, you’re not going to get anywhere fast.”

He added: “This group of players don’t dig in when the going gets tough, they fail, they fail too easily.”

United have also just scored nine times in 10 Premier League games and Keane knows that is a serious problem too.

“Lack of goals is a big problem for Man Utd,” added Keane. “Every time I read the league table, after nine or 10 games, minus three goals from Manchester United, it’s difficult to read.”

Jamie Redknapp compares United’s game to “pub football”

United are currently minus three goals and they also finished with a negative record in the for-against column last season, scoring 57 but conceding 58.

Watching them draw 1-1 with Chelsea at Old Trafford, fellow Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp noted the quality of the game, saying both sides compared to where they really are.

“It was a difficult time until the goal was scored. At times it felt like playing in a pub. From United’s point of view, I’ve seen them play worse this season,” said former Liverpool star Redknapp.

“When I look at United, they are really playing badly. Organization will help, but when I played against the best teams, they were chaos. They’ve always been such a mess, but I don’t know if they have any good habits.”

Despite this, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy was disappointed his side did not take home the three points after Moises Caicedo equalized shortly after Bruno Fernandes’ penalty.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t win, we had more chances in the game but overall it was a fantastic game. They left everything on the field,” he said Sky Sports.

“It was a great moment, the goal, with Old Trafford erupting. Bruno Fernandes handled it well and the emotions came out. This week was special, I enjoyed every second of it. I’m here to help, support the new manager and make sure the club grows.

“We support the new manager, everyone at the new club is focused on two games which should be very important, but then we will work hard to make this club better every day.”

Manchester United transfer latest: Gokeres refuses transfer talk / first signing under cards

One man who could certainly help United’s lack of firepower in attack is Sporting starlet Viktor Gokeres, with the Swede already scoring more goals than United’s squad combined this season.

The Swede is in high demand, having scored 20 goals and provided four assists in 16 appearances. although he made it clear that he wanted to stay in the Portuguese capital at least for a while.

“Are you moving to Manchester United with Amorim? I don’t know,” Gokeres said when asked about the possibility of joining Amorim after he scored four goals against Estrella on Friday night.

“I’m here. As you can see, I like it at Sporting.

“I don’t really think about anything. I am sad that he (Amorim) is gone. We wish him all the best.”

Meanwhile, reports in Spain claim United ‘open talks’ over deal to bomb Jamal Musiala, first signing of Amorim era at Old Trafford.

The contract of the Bayern Munich star expires in the summer of 2026, and negotiations on an extension have not yet yielded a positive result. As a result, United are keen to take the opportunity to bring the playmaker back to English football, although any deal would likely destroy their club record.

This is also reported elsewhere Amorim is ready to give permission for the return of Benfica full-back Alvaro Carreras.

The Red Devils continue to struggle for options at left-back but could solve the problem by including a buy-out clause in the Spaniard’s deal – something Amorim is reportedly keen to do.
