Residents near the scene of last night’s alleged killing say they are shocked by what happened on their usually quiet Oakland street.

Police were called to a home on Brandon Road in Glen Eden shortly after 11pm on Sunday night to find a woman suffering from multiple stab wounds.

She was taken to the hospital, but died soon after.

A 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with murder.

Neighbors describe Brandon Road as a quiet, family-friendly neighborhood.

In an area next to the police cordon, a Fia resident told RNZ he was saddened to hear what had happened.

“It’s a quiet street and unfortunately this happened … our neighbor, it’s a bit scary.”

Fia said he didn’t know his neighbors.

“We don’t talk, but their kids are always playing with our kids.”

Further up the road, Jeremy Armstrong said the area is generally safe.

“It’s usually a pretty quiet area – it’s quite shocking.”

The arrested man was expected to appear in the Waitakere District Court on Monday and police are not looking for anyone else.
