“I have to grow up”

“I have to grow up”

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The little things often mean the difference between winning and losing. For the New York Giants, who lost to the Washington Commanders 27-22their who, in their 27-22 loss to the Washington Commanders, their fourth straight loss and fifth at home this season, the little things came back to bite the Giants again.

The blame is all over the place, but among the problems were a third straight game in which the Giants had a penalty, a touchdown wiped off the board, receivers running one yard short of a first-down marker, dropped passes, missed tackles and even head-scratching coaching decisions.

It all added up to yet another disappointing Giants team, whose season is now 2-7 and essentially over — due to a lack of attention to detail, inconsistent play and, at times, questionable coaching decisions.

While many on the Giants mourned another missed opportunity, rookie cornerback Drew Phillips, who broke up a tackle on 3rd-and-18 that helped set up a second touchdown for Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin, was beside himself in locker room when he got over himself. for plays he did not play.

“If I make that tackle on third down, it’s not going to happen,” Phillips said. “I’ll take it on the chin; I don’t care. I have to be better. I have to be better at my details. I have to grow up.”

Head coach Brian Daboll was asked about the turnovers on a third-and-long that the defense gave up.

“I’m not going to go into details, but we haven’t done them,” he said. “So that’s the hardest part. These are some big performances. But don’t make excuses, they made them and we didn’t.”

Still, Phillips was more than willing to take the blame for getting things wrong, not only for the third-and-long he gave up, but also for McLaurin’s second touchdown, which initially looked like cornerback Deonte Banks was at fault.

“We play technique. I have to take it under me. We have to include McLaurin. yes I have to do it. Here, it’s me. I have to be better for this team, for (Banks), for this organization.”

Phillips, who grew more agitated as he spoke, said he had no excuse for missing that or any other appointment.

“I need to grow up and take what we do, go through and practice in the game. because we’ve seen it. Nothing new that we haven’t seen. I have to play better,” he said.
