Be prepared to issue a hard-to-control bushfire warning near Buckland

Updated at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, November 2: The wildfire warning level has now been downgraded to monitor conditions.

“There is no immediate threat,” TFS says.

“The fire is moving towards Westerly towards Sand River Road and Buckland Road.”

Earlier: Smoke covers the Buckland area on the state’s east coast as a wildfire burns just off Sand River Road.

The fire was reported to authorities around 6pm on Friday night and a fire warning and evacuation alert was later issued.

The Tasmania Fire Service said at 2.45pm on Saturday that the fire was expected to cover Sand River Road, Buckland Road and surrounding areas within two hours.

“The fire is spreading to the west … (and) is expected to be difficult to control,” the TFS warned.

“Coal, smoke and ash may fall on Sand River Road, Buckland Road and surrounding areas.”

Firefighters are currently battling the fire, and several helicopters arrived at the scene around 3:30 p.m.

Tasmania Police have closed Sand River Road at Buckland Road and are turning away those who do not need to be in the area.

The Tasmanian Fire Service says people in the area should take immediate action to protect themselves and their homes.

“If you’re not prepared for a forest fire, be prepared to go somewhere safer,” they said.

“Only travel when it is safe for you. If you have a wildfire plan in place, check it now.”

“Unless you live near Sand River Road, Buckland Road and surrounding areas, stay away.”

AND A severe weather warning is in effect for much of the state this afternoongusts over 100 km/h are expected.
