Argentine police searched the Buenos Aires hotel where Liam Payne died

Argentine police have raided the Buenos Aires hotel where former One Direction singer Liam Payne stayed before he died last week after falling from a third-floor balcony, a government official said Thursday.

On the order of the prosecutor’s office, the police unit of special investigations arrived at the Casa Sur hotel on Wednesday evening. Officers seized items including computer hard drives and footage from hotel cameras, a government official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The singer died on October 16 after falling from a third-floor balcony in an elite tourist area of Palermo. According to an autopsy, Payne died from multiple injuries and internal and external bleeding caused by the fall. His body was found in the courtyard of the hotel.

Initial investigations indicate that the musician was alone and suffering from a “breakdown” due to the use of an as-yet-undetermined substance. After Payne’s death, police found substances in his hotel room, as well as several destroyed items and furniture, prosecutors said.

According to a preliminary toxicology report published by local media on Monday and confirmed to AP by a source familiar with the matter, the British boy star had cocaine in his system. The final results are expected to be released in a few weeks.

The Casa Sur Hotel has become a place to honor Payne’s fans. They left flowers, candles and photos of the singer in a makeshift shrine around a tree near the hotel entrance.

The singer’s father, Jeff Payne, is in Buenos Aires arranging the repatriation of his son’s body, which is expected to be extradited around October 28.

Payne’s family, which includes his mother Karen Payne and his two sisters Ruth and Nicola, expressed their devastation at the loss, as did his former bandmates. Artists and celebrities from different countries continue to share their grief.

One Direction was one of the most successful boy bands of recent times. An indefinite hiatus was announced in 2016, and Payne, like his former bandmates Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, embarked on a solo career.

The singer posted on his Snapchat account that he traveled to Argentina to attend Horan’s concert in Buenos Aires on October 2. He shared videos of himself dancing with his girlfriend, American influencer Kate Cassidy, and singing along to them in the stands. Cassidy left Argentina after the show, while Payne stayed.
