NBA reopens investigation into Jackson Hayes after new video released

NBA reopens investigation surrounding the July 2021 incident involving Jackson Hayes.

In new videos received TMZThe 24-year-old Los Angeles Lakers center has been involved in a physical altercation with his then-girlfriend Sofia Jamora, which has been linked to an argument over their pet dogs.

The incident happened hours before he was arrested for an altercation with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) that evening.

After the publication of the video, the NBA reacted in a statement, trans ESPNsaying, “In light of the media report and video released this morning, we are reopening our investigation.”

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Hayes told the paper, “We’ve already been conducting an extensive investigation in which we’ve cooperated with the league, and when that investigation resumes, we’ll continue with it.”

The NBA did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. A representative for Hayes could not be reached.

Hayes and Jamora can be heard arguing on security footage. At one point Jamora says, “Stop. Let me go,” before the basketball player responds, “What the hell is wrong with you?”

As the ex-couple leave the residence, Jamora goes on to say in the video, “I’m not going to let you hit me anymore. She also threatens to call the police on Hayes.

The video then shows Hayes, who was playing for the New Orleans Pelicans at the time, walking away from his ex-girlfriend before returning to spit on her.

After an argument many years ago, Los Angeles police responded to the internal conflict report.

At that time, officers asked Hayes to remain outside while they spoke with Jamora about the alleged incident, but the athlete was uncooperative and attempted to return to the residence several times.

“Officers used physical force to knock Hayes to the ground in order to overcome his resistance. Once on the ground, Hayes attempted to get up and continued to resist officers. Officers used Tasers twice, as well as body weight and physical force during the altercation.” – said in a preliminary statement of the Los Angeles police.

According to NBC SportsJamora claimed that Hayes had abused her in the past. She filed a lawsuit against the basketball player, which is still ongoing.

The paper reported that Hayes was charged with 12 misdemeanors and sentenced to three years of probation, including community service and attending classes on domestic violence.

Hayes had not been charged by the NBA at the time of the incident.

According to NBC Sports, Hayes and the Lakers are currently cooperating with the investigation.
