Correctional officer arrested for alleged drug possession at MCI-Shirley

MILFORD. A corrections officer was arrested Saturday for allegedly bringing synthetic cannabinoid-laced paper to Massachusetts’ Shirley Correctional Institution, authorities said.

Roxsandra Wright was taken into custody on a felony warrant issued by Ayer County District Court for delivering contraband to an inmate, an investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Department of Corrections and Narcotics Unit revealed.

Synthetic paper with cannabinoids refers to paper treated with chemicals designed to mimic THC, a compound found in cannabis. Studies show that substance use is usually associated with serious health problems and can be life-threatening.

“The Massachusetts Department of Corrections requires all employees to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity,” said DOC Interim Commissioner Sean Jenkins. “Any behavior that compromises the security of our facilities or undermines public trust will not be tolerated.”

A medium-security state prison recently implemented a drug prevention approach because of the risks contraband poses to the safety and health of both staff and inmates, the Department of Corrections said in a news release.

The approach involves the use of advanced screening technology, strict operational protocols, intensive staff training and education, and close collaboration with law enforcement partners to prevent and intercept contraband, they said.

“DOC is continually adapting its protocols to address emerging threats to ensure a safe and rehabilitative environment for all incarcerated in state correctional facilities,” they wrote.

Wright resigned from the department earlier this month, effective Oct. 31, authorities said. She is expected to be arraigned in Ayer District Court on November 4.
