Grand Island man gets eight to 20 years in prison for felony vehicular manslaughter

A Grand Island man was sentenced last week to eight to 20 years in prison for driving under the influence and causing the death of an 18-year-old passenger.

Hall County District Court Judge Patrick Lee sentenced 20-year-old Quentin Scrogin on Wednesday for felony vehicular manslaughter. Skrogin was also sentenced to 30 days each for driving under the influence and willful reckless driving, both misdemeanors, with all sentences to run consecutively.

Prosecutors said Brennan Villatoro died Nov. 16, 2023, while riding in a car driven by Scrogin that crashed west of Grand Island at 1:40 a.m. Villatoro was one of five passengers in a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Scrogin.

Investigators determined Scrogin was driving recklessly while heading north on Schaupsville Road. He lost control near Wildwood Road and the car overturned.

Villatoro, one of the two ejected passengers, was pronounced dead at the scene. Skrogin and the other passengers were taken by ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center.

Scroggin was also disqualified from driving for 15 years. In a plea deal, two felony counts, including aggravated assault, were dismissed. According to state sentencing guidelines, Scrogin will be eligible for parole after four years and must be released after serving 10 years.
