A man has been arrested after raping a woman on the grounds of Hereford Cathedral

A man was arrested after raping a woman on the grounds of Hereford Cathedral.

West Mercia Police said officers attended the scene after reports of a woman being raped at around 4.30am on Sunday.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape and remains in police custody, the police said.

There has been an increased police presence in Hereford following the incident.

Detective Inspector Colin Berry said: “We understand that incidents like this can be disturbing to the community and I want to reassure the community that we believe there is no greater risk to the community. Currently, the victim is being assisted by our specially trained officers.

“After reviewing CCTV footage, there are people who were passing through the area around the time of the incident that we would like to speak to.

“You may have seen something suspicious or witnessed part of the incident, but any information you can provide could be valuable to our investigation and we urge you to come forward.”
