In the Ecuadorian Amazon, a truck crashed, 10 people died

QUITO, Ecuador — Ten people were killed Sunday when a truck they were traveling in fell into a gorge in the Ecuadorian Amazon, law enforcement agencies in the South American country said.

Police in the Amazonian province of Morona-Santiago, in the southeast of the country, said that the only survivor of the accident was a 3-year-old girl. Authorities did not immediately reveal the cause of the accident.

Ecuador’s United Security Service said in a statement that the vehicle stopped near the Paute River after falling into a ravine early Sunday morning. Photos released by the agency show an overturned car surrounded by rocks on the river bank.

Roads in Ecuador were congested over the weekend due to the five-day Day of the Dead holiday.
